Most people with fibromyalgia who come into our office have already heard a few things. Their labs look normal. They should sleep more and stress less. Sometimes, without anyone saying it outright, they’ve picked up the idea that the pain might be in their head. Finding the right fibromyalgia chiropractor can help in managing these misconceptions.
It isn’t. Fibromyalgia is real, and researchers now understand a big part of it as a problem with how the nervous system processes pain. The volume knob is turned up. A hug can hurt. A long day at a desk can turn into two bad days afterward.
If you’ve been looking for a fibromyalgia chiropractor, you’re probably looking for something that helps without making things worse. That’s a reasonable thing to want, and it’s worth knowing what chiropractic care can and can’t do before you book anything with a fibromyalgia chiropractor.
What chiropractic can’t do for fibromyalgia
We’ll start here because it matters. No chiropractor can cure fibromyalgia. Anyone who promises that, or asks you to sign up for a 60-visit package on day one, isn’t someone you should trust with a condition this sensitive.
Research on chiropractic and manual therapy for fibromyalgia is limited. Some small studies show better pain, sleep and range of motion, especially when hands-on care is paired with exercise. Others show smaller effects. Our experience matches that. It helps some people quite a bit, helps others a little, and isn’t the right fit for everyone.
Where it tends to help
Fibromyalgia rarely shows up alone. Many of our patients also deal with a stiff neck, low back pain, tension headaches or a tight jaw on top of the widespread ache. Those problems are often mechanical, and they’re the part we can usually do something about.
When a tight neck stops feeding headaches, or a stuck low back moves a little easier, the overall pain load drops. That can make it easier to sleep, walk the dog or get through a workday. For a lot of people, the real win is a few more good days each month.
How we change our approach for fibromyalgia
A standard adjustment isn’t always the right call for someone whose nervous system is already on high alert. So we adjust the plan to the person in front of us.
- We use low-force techniques, including the Activator Method, which uses a small handheld instrument instead of a manual thrust.
- Soft tissue work stays light, and we check in with you often during treatment.
- On flare days we keep visits short. Sometimes the right call is to skip the adjustment entirely.
- You go home with a small amount of movement to do, not a 45-minute routine you’ll abandon by Thursday.
That last point deserves more space.
Movement matters more than the adjustment
If the fibromyalgia research agrees on one thing, it’s that gentle, regular exercise helps. Walking, water exercise, stretching and light strength work all have support. The catch is that too much too soon causes a flare, and a flare makes people afraid to move again.
Part of our job is helping you find a starting point that doesn’t backfire. For one patient that’s five minutes of walking. For another it’s a few stretches done lying down. We build from there slowly and change the plan when life gets in the way.
Working with your other providers
Most of our fibromyalgia patients already have a primary care doctor, and some also see a rheumatologist, a pain specialist or a counselor. Chiropractic fits alongside that care. We don’t change medications or tell you to stop anything your doctor prescribed. If something in your exam suggests another problem needs a closer look, we’ll tell you and point you to the right person.
What your first visit looks like
Your first appointment is mostly conversation and gentle testing. We want to know where it hurts, what makes it worse, how you’re sleeping and what a bad week looks like for you. Then we check how your spine and joints move and which areas are tender.
After that, we’ll tell you plainly whether we think we can help. If we do, treatment usually starts the same day, at a pace you agree to. If we don’t, we’ll say so. Our front desk can check your insurance coverage before you come in.
