While we all love indulging in a few extra treats around Halloween, we also try to be mindful of the foods we are fueling our bodies with. Instead of loading up on sugar and fat this season, try these three ideas for something sweet, something salty and something seasonally delicious. All three are downright tasty treats with a festive twist.
Snack-o-Lantern Fruit Cups
Can’t get enough of Halloween carving? Try this sweet treat for a healthy, festive snack. Carefully slice the top off a navel orange, then scoop out the orange segments. Carve your orange just like you would a pumpkin, then fill it with your favorite bite-sized fruits, like berries, along with the orange slices. Pop the top back on and serve.
Pumpkin Fries with Spicy Ketchup
This yummy finger food is ready in no time and packed with seasonal flavor. Peel and seed a small pumpkin and slice it into 1/4” sticks. Toss with olive oil and a bit of curry powder to taste, then roast on an oiled baking sheet at 425 degrees for about 15 minutes. Serve with ketchup mixed with hot sauce for a spicy kick.
Warm Spiced Apple Cider
We love this drink because it tastes great, is easy to make in a slow cooker and makes the whole house smell divine.
Gather up these ingredients:
10 apples (We like a mix of Granny Smith, gala and honey crisp)
1 orange, sliced and peeled
1/2 tablespoon whole cloves
1 whole nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon all spice
3 cinnamon sticks
10 cups water
1/2 cup honey
Chop up your apples orange slices, then toss in the slow cooker with spices and water. Stir, then let your slow cooker work its magic for 7 to 8 hours on low heat or 4 hours on high.
When one hour is left on the timer, use a potato masher to mash the fruit (you won’t have to try hard – they will be soft by now!). Add the honey, then let the cider continue to cook for an hour. Strain the cider using a fine meshed sieve, serve warm and enjoy! You can even freeze the cider to enjoy it well into winter.
