September is National Better Breakfast Month, so we thought we’d take this occasion to talk about “the most important meal of the day” and create one that is most beneficial to your well-being and health.

The Benefits of a Good Breakfast

Enjoying a well-balanced breakfast in the morning fuels your body and mind. Studies show that people who eat a healthy breakfast tend to get more vitamins and minerals in their diet, perform better on the job, are more likely to reach and stay at a healthy weight and have better control over their blood sugar.

What’s a Healthy Breakfast?

When you think of a “healthy breakfast,” a vision of a green superfood smoothie or bland bran muffin may flash across your mind, but your meal doesn’t have to be stereotypical. As long as the following elements are in your breakfast, you’re starting the day of right:

Fruits and veggies: Enjoy them raw or add them to your egg scramble, smoothie or yogurt.

Whole grains: Get a punch of fiber from whole-grain waffles, cereals, bagels or bread to keep you fuller longer.

Lean protein: Supercharge your morning with protein from meat, nuts, legumes or eggs.

Making Time for Breakfast

Many people skip breakfast because mornings are hectic and they don’t have time to prep a meal before running out the door. We get it! But there are a few easy tricks to fitting in breakfast on even the most hectic mornings.

Prep your meal the night before by making overnight oats, an egg dish that’s easy to reheat or a smoothie. Make a to-go breakfast that you can eat during your commute. Even just setting out your cookware and ingredients the night before can make you more likely to make a healthy breakfast in the morning.
