We all know that making health a priority is important, but the coronavirus pandemic has really hit that point home more than ever. We often hear from patients who know they should be working out, eating a more balanced diet or drinking more water, but they struggle to find the time and motivation in between their never-ending to-do lists and the daily grind of life.
The three most common reasons we hear from people who want to improve their lifestyle but haven’t yet are time, knowledge and money. Maybe they don’t have time after a long day to cook, they don’t know what makes a well-balanced meal or they think they can’t afford healthy ingredients. These same reasons are applied to everything from not getting enough exercise to feeling unable to reduce stress.
There’s one easy trick to overcoming all of these excuses — making your health a priority. When you firmly decide to make your health a priority, it becomes much easier to find the time and resources to enhance it.
This starts with being selfish. Yes, that’s right — we want you to be selfish! Too often, we put ourselves last on our list of priorities, under family, our jobs, kids, pets or money. If this is hard for you, think about it this way: putting yourself first and making your health a priority will put you in a better position to care for and commit to all the other important things in your life.
Make a Plan
People often talk about “finding time,” but you’ll never just find extra hours in the day. You have to make time. And one of the great things about planning is that if you take just a bit of time to think something through, you’ll end up saving more time in the long-run. The work is an investment.
Invest some time once a week to plan out your meals. Creating a meal plan helps cut-down on time spent at the grocery store, helps you avoid food waste, takes the guesswork out of cooking and can help you save money.
Do the same for workouts. Look at your schedule to find ways you can break a sweat throughout the week. This may mean getting up a little earlier or just taking a walk on your lunch break. “Self care” is an expression being tossed around often these days, and for good reason. Stress can have a detrimental effect on your health, but doing a few little things every day can drastically reduce it. Make a list of things that relax you and make you happy. Choose one or two to experience each day. Some of our lists include taking baths, meditating, listening to happy music and even just taking a walk around the block. We love yoga too, and find it a great complementary practice to chiropractic. Whatever brings you joy, do it for your health!
Get More Sleep
We feel pretty confident that the majority of people reading this could use more sleep. We all could, right? If you aren’t getting seven to nine hours of shut-eye a night, your health is likely suffering. Commit to a bedtime ritual, and try to stick to it every night of the week. Turn off your phone or shut your computer down a half hour before hitting the sheets, try some soothing chamomile tea and spend a few minutes trying to clear your mind before your head hits the pillow.
